When you get on a passenger aircraft, we assume that it’s been undergoing regular maintenance and pre-flight checks. But what about unmanned aircraft? We check that the propellers are okay, that the battery isn’t cracked or puffy, and that there’s nothing amiss with the fuselage, with more detailed checks for commercial operators. But how do you do it at scale? What about drone swarms, or fleets of autonomous drones? NASA recently posted about the Fit2Fly initiative. What if a drone could “sign-off” with a standard, recognized digital certificate that offers assurances it’s safe to be in the air? The system combines data that the drone can gather itself, with human generated input for other periodic maintenance, to keep drones in compliance.

A new product has hit the FCC test bench from DJI, and it appears to be a motion controller for its upcoming FPV drone. After previously sharing news of a possible DJI joystick controller, it appears that it will be released with or close to the FPV drone. A new filing under DJI’s name has hit the FCC database under the name DJI Motion Controller and ID of FC7BMC2011. The usual documents and FCC label has also appeared, giving us a little insight into the upcoming product.

Northrop Grumman has revealed that it conducted an anti-submarine test involving a surrogate for its MQ-8C Fire Scout drone helicopter equipped to drop sonobuoys.
