They had previously asked the US Federal Aviation Administration for permission to test a drone for monitoring and fighting fires. However, its drone plans, have since been extinguished. The Google Research group asked for permission to operate an unmanned aircraft system called the HSE-UAV M8A Pro, which weighs between 55 and 99 pounds. That drone, made by Homeland Surveillance & Electronics for agricultural purposes like spraying chemicals on crops, could in theory be filled with water to put out a fire, a Bloomberg report noted. Google, though, has "no immediate plans to reengage on this work," said a spokesperson on Wednesday, adding that the petition to the FAA was submitted "almost a year ago for a project we were considering exploring at the time."

Drones deliver drugs, smartphones, smart watches to Ontario prison

https://www.dronebook.org/m/sites/view/Drones-deliver-drugs-smartphones-smart-watches-to-Ontario-prison

https://www.dronebook.org/m/sites/view/Drones-deliver-drugs-smartphones-smart-watches-to-Ontario-prison

Drone delivery is a never ending topic in the scene. Some people claim that the day will never come when they will be able to order a pair of tube socks online, and have them delivered by drone. One of the most lucrative drone delivery services has been in operation for a few years without the public even being aware. A Toronto Star report reveals that drones were used “dozens” of times on deliveries to the Ontario, Canada, prison in 2019, shuttling in tens of thousands of dollars worth of drugs and contraband – including smart watches. The results of a public information request revealed 27 reported incidents of drone flights to the prison in 2019, an average of slightly more than one flight every two weeks. For example, on July 1, an Inspire capable of carrying a six-kilogram payload crashed shortly before 2 a.m. while hauling tobacco, marijuana, cigar leaves, two micro USB devices, two USB cords, two mini cellphones, three charging cables and four SIM cards — the institutional value of the load estimated at $18,464.

Autonomous drones are getting their own tiny airport in the UK

https://www.dronebook.org/m/sites/view/Autonomous-drones-are-getting-their-own-tiny-airport-in-the-UK

https://www.dronebook.org/m/sites/view/Autonomous-drones-are-getting-their-own-tiny-airport-in-the-UK

A startup called Urban-Air Port has partnered with Hyundai to help secure a £1.2 million grant from the British government's Future Flight Challenge program to finance the construction of the "world's smallest airport" exclusively for drone services.
